Urinary tract infections are very painful. The excruciating pain might make you desperate to try anything if it even remotely assures you that it will take away the pain. In this article I will explain you the advantages and disadvantages of using UTI antibiotics and pain killers.
First, if you think you are infected by a urinary tract infection, you should immediately see a doctor. A UTI infection will not go away on its own unlike a common cold. Most of the time it could get even worse, as the time goes by. The worst part is that if its left untreated, the bacteria can reach as far as your uterus and kidneys. At any point you should not let the infection to get that far because it can cause permanent damage to your kidneys and can even become fatal to your health.
Sometimes things like these can happen at the least unexpected time like on the weekends or during the holidays. If you cannot get hold of a doctor at that moment, then one way you can temporarily stop the pain is by taking special pain killers designed to take care of urinary tract infections. Most of them are available over the counter in pharmacies as well as many grocery stores. Although, there are many different brands available but all of them contain similar ingredients. The most popular brands among them are Uristat and Azo.
However, be aware that there are many side effects associated with these medicines and some of which can be as bad as the UTI itself. For instance, when I first tried Uristat out of sheer desperation, I was laying down on my bed feeling so nauseated that if I had moved a little, I probably would have to vomit. But it did take away the pain caused by UTI. Not everyone experiences these side effects, so it's definitely worth a try if your pain is unbearable and you have no other option left. But it should be your last resort not a method for regular treatment.
Please do not take normal "all-in-one" over the counter pain killers such as Advil or Tylenol. They are advertised to work on all kinds of pain, but they do not work on urinary tract infection pain at all. I know and I have tried them myself. While they did not make me feel any worse than I already was but they did not help me feel better either. Taking medication you don't need is definitely not good for your health. Therefore you should stick only to those medicines that are specially made for urinary tract pain until you can see a doctor.
